We arrived at our hotel, Shearwater, after a short drive from the small airport In Vic Falls, Zimbabwe. The rooms that we stayed in were only two months old. We dropped off our luggage and went to Victoria Falls Park to have lunch at the Rainforest Cafe. After lunch we had a tour of the falls that were absolutely beautiful. So different from Niagara Falls that is one continuous fall. We saw people swimming at Devil’s Pool that is located at the edge of one of the falls on the Botswana side. Apparently there is a rock wall that has formed sort of a pool. No one stayed in very long because the water probably was not more than 50 degrees. People were literally looking over the top of the falls. Scary and crazy.

The first day we just walked around the town doing plenty of shopping. We saw this monkey take the lid off a peanut butter jar and enjoy his spoils.

We also saw this very colorful woman who was carrying wood to sell. Zimbos, as they are called, have a very difficult life. There is a 95% unemployment rate here. They have no paper to print passports so no one can leave. They have no license plates. Their currency has collapsed and US dollars are now accepted. They recently started printing their own money called the “bond ” but the rate of value changes daily so no one will use them. There are no ATMs because the banks have no money. At customs there were hundreds of trucks filled with products just waiting to be cleared. Our guide said it can take up to two weeks for them to pass through customs.

A small portion of the falls.

Our second day in Victoria Falls will be one that will change my life.
