On our way to to the Sahara we stopped at a fossil factory to learn how they cut and polish to reveal the beautiful fossils in them. The long narrow fossils are called squid.

A beautiful sink basin.
The diamond tip saw used to cut the stone.
Putting the detail in the table with a saw blade.
Starting the process of polishing the piece.

From the fossil factory we traveled to the city of Rissani and wandered through the souk. I bought spices and was escorted by Khalid’s helper. Abdul.

I bought cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, ginger and 2 kinds of paprika. Saffron will come in another town.

We stopped in a bakery and watched the production. Most of the bread and baked goods taste a little bland as we believe that they do not use salt in baking. All the food also requires salt and is never on the table. It always has to be requested.

The final product.

We wandered around the souk and saw lots of colorful things. Each town has a weekly market and we happened to be in Rissani on the right day.

The parking lot for vendors and customers.
You have to love that mint!

We finally arrived at our hotel at the edge of the Sahara. We are spending one night here before we sleep in the tented camp.

Outdoor pool.
Indoor pool.
Our first desert sunset.
