I missed posting pictures of our room yesterday. It is definitely worth a look.

For you color geeks – each one of those colors has the hex designation listed. At first I though I was looking at a Sherwin Williams color chart.
The bathroom. It is actually quite amazing to look at.

Back to today. Breakfast at this hotel made me very happy because they had a casserole of only vegetables. The previous hotel was very heavy on meats and other things I don’t care to eat. After finishing breakfast we had a 10:00 am reservation to see “Fly Over Iceland.” The set up was much like Soarin at Disney. What a gorgeous country this is! We then took a little walk around the marina before our next excursion at noon.

First true blue skies that we have seen since arriving in Iceland.

Today was what we have been waiting for – the Blue Lagoon. Before our excursion Peggy and I decided that we would put on our bathing suits under our clothing. A very smart move on our part. When we arrived, they took us to the changing room and gave us directions. After changing into your suit you are suppose to go to the shower stall, take off your bathing suit, shower, put your bathing suit back on with your wet body and go into the thermal pool. Needless to say I streamlined that procedure and showered with my bathing suit on. After that you walk out into 40 degree weather into the 100 degree thermal pool. There is no way to describe what this water felt like. Obviously it is blue and that color is the result of the silica in the water. The water was not clear at all. You could not even see your hand under the water. The pool was between waist deep to shoulder deep. Regardless of the depth you always kept under the water as much as possible.

As part of our package was a silica mask. You swam up to the kiosk and you were given a scoop of white silica. You took the silica and put it all over your face and neck. It was funny to see everyone in white face. Bald men even had it on their heads. Next we had to swim up to the bar. Free wine! A girl in heaven. We soaked for approximately 2 hours.

If you read my previous post about the elves you know some of the history of these hidden people. We were told a story by one of the lifeguards about how the elves controlled the expansion of the Blue Lagoon. Apparently they wanted to built a hotel on the property. For 6 months they tried to cut through the lava rock and the machinery kept breaking. This was not normal so being a superstitious people they decided to contact an Elf Whisperer. Who knew? So the Elf Whisperer discovered that the hotel was to be built on top of the Parliament building of the elves. The elves wanted to see all the plans and blueprints of the project and they wanted them from someone in charge. So they contacted the President of Iceland who came to the site. Along with the Elf Whisperer they put the plans in the hole. They waited and waited and finally the elves told the Whisperer that they were happy with the decision to move the project and it as okay to build. The building started the next day in the new location with no more problems.

I am thinking of applying for the job of Elf Whisperer for Habitat. I might be able to help with some of those construction delays.

After getting dressed, of course there had to be shopping and of course I had to buy tube of silica mask. Hopefully I will have better luck getting it through US Customs than I did coming home from Morocco. They confiscated my cosmetic items because they could not read the ingredients because they were in French.

The white material around the edges is the silica.
Lava rocks covered with moss. The moss takes 50 years to grow. It is illegal to touch the moss.

Back to the hotel with my latest friend.

Tonight was our farewell reception that consisted of a drink, potato chips and mixed nuts. Really? I wanted to tell our guide what our farewell dinner in Morocco consisted of. Good thing we signed up for an extra excursion for a Viking Dinner.

A little hookey but still a lot of fun!
This was very gross! The cubes were raw shark and the stuff in the middle was dried shark. After eating a bite you were supposed to drink this Icelandic liquor.
The only table that this guy sang to was ours. I think it was because we sang along with him during one song. He did, however, have a beautiful voice.
Lamb shank. I felt very sorry for the people that hated lamb because there were no other options.
The Viking Queens

This is the end of the Gate 1 part of the tour. Peggy and I are staying on an extra day. Tomorrow we are going on a tour of the western peninsula of Iceland that we did not cover on the main tour.
