The Hadzabe is a tribe of hunters and gatherers who have been living the same way for the last 10,000 years. They are one of the last groups in the entire world. They are known for their unique “click language” that we all tried to mimic and failed terribly. We picked up our guide for this visit who is a member of the Tonga tribe. We drove to where the tribe was suppose to be but the village was deserted. When there are no animals to hunt because it is the dry season the tribe will move until they can find game. After several attempts we finally found a tribe and were welcomed by two young warriors.

All of the warriors were very proud to show off their skills. The younger warriors definitely impressed us with their climbing skills.

The next task was to get Andy and Ron to kill a mouse with a bow and arrow. Roasted mice are considered snacks and are given to the children if there is a shortage of food. Andy tried hard but Ron was the one that got the mouse.

I don’t normally post a lot of videos but the only way you can understand how these people live is seeing them first hand. There is no way to adequately describe what we saw this day. Basically their day consists of going hunting every morning for 4-5 hours and again in the evening. The women of the tribe dig for yams or pick berries if they can find them. They are constantly being displaced when land is sold for farming or raising cattle. It is projected that the Hadzabe people will probably not even exist in another generation because there will be no land left for them to live.

An interesting fact is the only animal they will not kill is the hyena because they leave their dead in the bush and basically the hyena eats the body. To kill a hyena and eat it would be like eating your ancestors.
