The Bar Turrisi is located in Castlemora on top of a mountain. It is “the” place for locals to take visitors. Our guide, Nino, was very careful to let everyone know ahead of time what the bar was like. Not everyone went. Of course, the girls were the first ones to say yes, yes.

The entire bar pays homage to the male penis. Yes, you read that correctly. Very explicit photos to follow.

What is the history of this bar? At the end of the 19th Century Castelmola and Taormina were the destination of the first LGBT communities. Among the most famous was Oscar Wilde who visited in 1892. Another famous resident was Baron Von Gloeden who moved to Taormina in 1878 and is famous for his classical photos of nude Sicilian men against breathtaking backdrops. Bar Turrisi was started by the Turrisi family in 1947 and has been past through the generations. Although it certainly has a cult following it truly pays homage to the history of Castelmola and Taormina.
