Before I came here I knew little about the Amalfi Coast other than the gorgeous pictures I have seen. Basically there are all these little towns along the coast connected by tiny treacherous roads and separated by mountains with the most famous and expensive being Positano. Where we are staying is definitely the quietest except when they pick up the garbage at 5:00 AM and I have left the windows open.
On our first full day here we took a bus to the next town of Almalfi for a guided tour of the area. The sights from the van were breathtaking.

Great walking tour around the town. While we were in one of the squares a team of 3 burrows came through with bags of cement in containers on their backs. It was explained to us that this is the only way to get building materials up the mountains. Because this is under UNESCO, we were told, if you see the burrows going up in the middle of the night you know that the homeowner is doing something that they shouldn’t be doing. Kind of like home.

A beautiful church in Amalfi was called the Duomo of Saint Andrea. When I got back to the hotel a picture of the church showed up on my feed with the comment that this is the most beautiful church in Amalfi that no one bothers to visit because they are so busy shopping and eating. Sadly, I regretted not going in that church.

Next off to lunch and a boat ride along the coast.

Back to Maiori for a wonderful dinner at the local restaurant on the water.

Because I don’t eat cheese the caprese salad was out. I got something better that everyone was jealous of. Tomato salad! The tomatoes here are wonderful and what a joy to eat a whole bowl of them.

Tomorrow we are driving up the mountain to Ravello to visit a restored villa and plenty of shopping. It will be Republic Day (like our 4th of July) and Sunday so there should be plenty of crowds.
