We left the beautiful city of Rabat in the pouring rain. We will be traveling west away from the Atlantic Ocean until we reach the Sahara Desert where we will spend Thursday night in a tented camp with the Bedouins. We stopped on the way at the Roman ruins in Volubilis. It was settled in 200 AD. It was occupied by Romans, Berbers and eventually Islamics. Because it is so remote and has been unoccupied for over 1000 years it is an architectural gem. Since it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, archeologists have flooded to the area.

Look at the size of these geraniums!
This was used to heat the tile floors in the Roman homes.
An example of a 2000 year old floor.
The gateway to Volubilis.
That is a stork nest on top of that column.
Current archeological excavations. They are sure, based on the size of the city that there must be and amphitheater and a colosseum located there.

After leaving Volubilis we drove to the city of Fes. Our guide, Khalid, told us he had a big surprise for us. We walked into the Medina (old city) down these narrow alleys until we walked into one of the most spectacular places I have ever seen, Riad Salem Fes. These pictures need no explanation.

The pool.
Our private room for breakfast.
Elevator doors.
Dinner in the hotel.

Tomorrow we spend the entire day walking in the Medina with stops at a tannery and rug market.
